Not a foodie

I love food.
But I am not a foodie.
Calling yourself a foodie seems so pretentious. kinda like Ego the food critic in Ratatouille.
or Gail Simmons from TopChef. yucky.
that's not me.
I grew up in the country. My grandparents grew up in the hollows in Appalachia.
I grew up eating corn bread, beans, smoked meats, squash casserole, apple cobbler, apple butter, cabbage and all manners of southern food. mmmm macaroni and cheese and collards.
I am not afraid to eat a Wendys burger (with cheese, mustard and onions) and a Frosty on occasion.
clearly I am not a foodie.
However, I do take issue with canned tuna. and boxed mac and cheese.
This was a huge deal in our house when we were first married.
Joseph is a LOVER of canned tuna. It makes me sick. literally. unfortunately for me my kids love it too. *puke*
I had never had any exotic cuisine until I left home at 19.
I moved 45mins away from my home and an entire world of food was waiting for me.
Joseph could careless about food. He would take a pill for all his nutritional needs if he could.
Not me.
Recently Joseph's cousin and his wife moved here. And he loves loves loves food too.
And he loves to bake bread.
So we are going to do a monthly bread baking challenge.
My hippy friend Chris recommended Peter Reinhardt's Artisan Breads Everyday and The Bread Bakers Apprentice.
Holy Amazing.
If you love to bake bread, these are the books for you.
The world of bread has been opened to me.
I am so excited to start using his techniques and recipes.
I am not a foodie.
But I love food.

watch out DAVY is the ultimate foodie...and I am so glad you are doing a bread challenge!!! Can't wait to hear the updates...I am with you on canned tuna, NASTY and I was raised on it too. greg would sooner die than serve that or BOXED mac n cheese to our kids...but we do serve them an occasional happy meal.

gillespies kinds of turned me into a foodie and food snob...like I said, tuna, bisquick and van dekamp fish sticks were staples at my house.

I know what you mean about the tuna. Jake loves it...grilled on a sandwich with cheese. YUCK! i can't even stand the smell. What is it with the Brian Gillespie boys and the food they like?

Oh, you haven't lived until you've been mucking around the mountains for hours, you crack open a can of tuna, suck out ALL the water, and then proceed to eat the fish with saltine crackers with no utensils...mmm, what a wonderful backpacking meal.

Seriously though, come see us in Thailand and Mali will introduce you to some fantastic Thai food that brilliantly simple but so delicious.

Ask Joe if he's ever cracked open a can of tuna at 8,000 feet, sucked out all the water, then proceeded to eat the tuna with saltine crackers and cheddar cheese and the only available utensil is a Swiss Army knife. Or maybe it's just me and a select few Varsity Scouts that tried that one on a backpacking trip.

Come see us in Thailand, Mali can introduce you to some Thai comfort food that is brilliantly simple, yet outrageously delicious. Then again, that might just be my opinion...

I think you're wrong. I've gone out to dinner with you, and I think that you are definitely one types of foodie. Maybe just an open minded foodie!
